Her mother was a wonderful cook and there were a number of Mexican cooks working at the inn. Later, her family moved to San Francisco, where Elena has since made her home, cooking, writing, and raising two sons. When Elena's eyesight failed, she raised herself from the hopelessness of her life by turning to what she knew best cooking.
