Description

Compass, Direct Reading Magnetic / Direction Indicator, US Navy ME-109This WWII era Direct Reading Magnetic Compass Direction Indicator Mark X, Kollsman 398C 01 was made for aircraft of the US Navy such as the seaplane JRF 5 Grumman Goose. The interesting aspect of the design of this compass is that the directional mechanism lies horizontally within the rear chamber, and displays the direction on a vertically mounted compass card. In addition, the desired course heading can be selected by rotating the knob at the bottom

but the book itself and all pages are intact and in very good condition

a small pointer which travels the perimeter of the compass card

Bendix 1629-1B (dial slightly askew)

It is not accurate

Altitude was indicated from 0-10

Here is a Rocket Station Distribution Box which appeared in WW2-era F4U Corsairs of the US Navy

to permit correction of the course by flight controls

each indicating the intercooler flap position on engines 1 & 2 or 3 & 4

The character below 8 9 1 is 京 and translates to the city of Kyoto

The pointers move freely

many of the aircraft in the photos were captured and then marked with US roundels to hopefully prevent them from being shot down by friendly forces while undergoing flight tests

but likely from 1955
